Bronze Reclining Cat Sculpture - Art Deco

This reclining cat sculpture in bronze lies in the pose of a sphinx: chest down, forelegs stretched straight out side by side, head held upright above them.

The head is a narrow wedge with two tall triangular ears and flat planes for the cheeks. The body is reduced to broad, polished surfaces without fur, and the tail curls round the haunch and closes on itself. The green patina is mottled and lightens along the ridges of skull, shoulder and back. The cat rests on a flat plinth of black marble veined in white, and a small signature is incised in the bronze beside the tail.

Art Deco animal sculpture liked to reduce a resting animal to a few clean volumes. The piece is in the manner of the Belgian animalier Michel Decoux (1837–1924), who worked the big cats in bronze and took them towards stylised forms. Every example is hand-cast and receives its green patina once out of the mould.

At 35 cm long and 17 cm high, it can lie on a stack of large art books on a side table, the green bronze against the black marble clear at arm’s length. From the front, the upright ears and parallel forelegs give the figure a strict symmetry.
