This bronze polar bear is a museum-quality piece after François Pompon (1855-1933), whose Ours blanc (White Bear) caused a stir at the 1922 Salon d'Automne. Pompon stripped the animal back to a single smooth, walking volume, and that pared-down silhouette became one of the defining images of modern animalier sculpture.

Pompon trained as a stonemason and spent years as a studio assistant, including time with Rodin, before he found his own language late in life: the essence of an animal caught in simplified, expressive form. This replica follows that approach, cast in bronze with a dark brown, almost black patina across the long, clean back and raised muzzle.

The minimalist shape reads beautifully from every angle and sits well on a console, shelf or plinth. A confident piece for collectors of bronze and modern sculpture.
