Two stylised parrots, each perched on a tall rectangular block, make up these bronze parrot bookends. The birds are turned towards each other but not mirrored: the left one lowers its head and tucks the hooked beak against its breast, while the right one holds its head up and turned away, its long pointed tail running down the front of the block.

The contrast of surfaces carries the design. The bodies are smooth, closed and glossy in a dark brown patina that is almost black, with eye and beak only lightly marked; the blocks below have a mottled, crackled texture. At the foot each block continues into the flat tongue that slides under the books.

A bird reduced to one smooth, closed volume is typical of Art Deco animal sculpture of the 1920s and 1930s. François Pompon (1855–1933) removed detail step by step, reaching for ‘the very essence of the animal’, and the parrots follow that direction. Each new pair is hand-cast in bronze and patinated by hand.

On a sideboard, with a row of folio volumes between them, the two dark birds read as one composition, the raised head on one side answering the bowed head on the other.
