Bronze Jockey on Horseback Sculpture

This bronze jockey on horseback is pared down to essentials: a rider in a peaked cap, without facial features, leaning forward over a horse that steps out with one foreleg raised and folded. Both arms reach forward as straight bars, the flattened hands resting on the crest of the neck – no reins, bridle or stirrups are modelled.

The horse arches its neck high, head drawn in towards the chest; the cheek is cut into flat planes, the ears are small and pointed, the mane a low ridge, the legs long and slender. Lost-wax casting (cire perdue) gives the group its form; the hand-applied patina, dark brown to almost black, warms to brown on the ear rims and the high points of neck and shoulder. It stands on a low, flat bronze plinth with canted corners and a moulded edge.

That clear, unornamented geometry belongs to Viennese design of the early twentieth century: the Wiener Werkstätte, founded in Vienna in 1903, worked in strongly geometric forms in its early years. The sculpture follows that language rather than any particular model.

At 43 cm high, set on a deep windowsill with daylight behind it, the jockey turns into a dark silhouette in which the peak of the cap and the folded foreleg read most sharply.
