Bronze Fawn Sculpture, Young Deer in Art Deco Style

This bronze deer sculpture shows a young deer without antlers, standing on four slender legs with its head raised and turned back over its shoulder, ears pricked. The dark brown patina, close to black, lightens to bronze on the ridges of the modelling.

The surface is handled loosely, in small facets that catch the light across the neck and flank, and the long, thin legs carry the fragility of a young animal. The deer stands on a rectangular bronze plinth with a roughly worked top, cast in one with the figure.

That expressive, naturalistic handling comes from the animalier sculptors, who from the nineteenth century onwards made the animal their principal subject; Antoine-Louis Barye modelled his from life at the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Each new deer is hand-cast from its own wax model (cire perdue) and then patinated by hand, so no two are quite alike.

Only 9.5 cm wide, the deer sits well on a narrow console table in a study, turned so that the head looks back over the shoulder into the room. From the front, the pricked ears and the slim legs make a tall, narrow silhouette.
