These bronze elephant bookends pair two contrasting poses: one elephant strides forward with its trunk curled low, the other sits back on its haunches with the trunk raised straight up. A blue-green verdigris patina covers both animals, and the golden-brown bronze shows through on the high points of the hide.

Each elephant stands on a stepped, profiled base with a flat vertical back plate, finished in warm golden-brown rather than green; the books are held between the two plates. The seated elephant is the larger, 27 cm high, the striding one 17.5 cm. Wrinkled hide, tusks and a flared ear are modelled in detail.

Both are new pieces cast by hand in lost wax (cire perdue). Every casting starts from a wax of its own, which leaves small differences from one pair to the next, and the patina is then applied by hand.

Pairs of animals in contrasting poses, made to stand at the two ends of a row of books, belong to the Art Deco decorative-bronze trade of the 1920s and 1930s, and the elephant, long a sign of strength and steadiness, was one of its favoured motifs. On a library table, at either end of a run of large-format art books, the taller seated elephant takes the heavier end.
