This cheetah sculpture in bronze catches the animal in the gathered phase of a sprint: all four legs are bunched beneath the body and only one hind paw touches the support, so the figure is thrown forward past the edge of its base.

The tail streams straight back, level with the spine, and the head is carried low with the ears laid flat. The musculature is smooth, without incised fur; the pelt is suggested by the patina instead, a glossy net of dark brown lines over ochre-gold fields. A small bronze block in the same patina carries the animal on a cube of polished black marble with a fine white vein.

The subject belongs to the animalier tradition. Antoine-Louis Barye (1795–1875) modelled animals from life at the Jardin des Plantes menagerie in Paris, and his relief series of 1831 included a leopard and a walking panther; Rembrandt Bugatti later worked from the animals of the Antwerp zoo. This new cheetah is hand-cast, then patinated.

Thirty-two centimetres long and 21 cm high, it fits an alcove shelf beside a chimney breast, where the forward-thrown body has open space in front of it. In profile the run from lowered muzzle to level tail reads as one line, held up on a single paw.
