This bronze bust is a character head after Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783), from his series of Charakterköpfe (Character Heads) modelled between 1770 and 1783. Messerschmidt based each head on his own face, holding a single extreme expression. Here the features pull into a tight, forced grin, the brow knotted above narrowed eyes.

The bust is cast in bronze and finished with a dark, near-black patina that follows every crease and tendon. The exact, almost clinical modelling is what makes the expression so direct.

This is the second of three Messerschmidt character heads in the KUZCO Art Maison collection. It stands on its own or completes the set of three, and suits collectors, galleries and design-led interiors.
