This bronze bust is a character head after Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783), modelled on his series of Charakterköpfe (Character Heads) made between 1770 and his death in 1783. Where his contemporaries carved portraits, Messerschmidt pushed the human face into extreme expression. This head is taken from The Incompetent Bassoonist, the mouth thrown open in a near-shout.

It is cast in bronze and finished with a dark, near-black patina that reads the tightened brow and the strained muscles around the jaw. The modelling is expressive and exact, which is what gives these heads their unsettling force.

This is the first of three Messerschmidt character heads in the KUZCO Art Maison collection. Each can stand alone or be shown together as a set, and the group suits collectors, galleries and design-led interiors.
