Bronze Cat Sculpture, Art Deco Style

This bronze cat sculpture sits upright and quite still, its head bowed so far that the chin nearly meets the chest and the eyes are closed to two curved slits.

The form is cut into flat, faceted planes that meet along hard ridges across chest, shoulder and haunch, and the ears are two flat triangles. The forepaws stand together with their toes incised, and the tail comes round past the right paw to lie on the low bronze base. The dark brown patina turns glossy on the ridges and reads almost black in the hollows.

Reducing an animal to planes of this kind belongs to Art Deco animal sculpture, which brought cats and big cats alike to clear, modern forms. The sculpture is cast in bronze from a wax model that is lost in the process – cire perdue – and finished by hand once out of the mould, so each new piece differs slightly from the last.

At 46 cm high it holds its own on top of an upright piano, well clear of the music desk. Seen from the side, the bowed head and the rounded back make one closed curve, the outline of a cat dozing upright.
