Peony Lidded Jar - Blue and White Porcelain

Stylised peonies cover this lidded jar from shoulder to foot, painted by hand in cobalt blue as round flower heads on thin scrolling stems with small leaves, leaving hardly any white ground between them.

A lobed ruyi collar circles the shoulder, set with small moulded heads, above a key-fret border at the neck; a ring of lotus-petal panels closes the design at the foot. The domed lid repeats the flowers and carries a seated Foo dog, the Buddhist guardian lion, in blue glaze.

In China the peony is known as the king of flowers, and East Asian art has long used it as a sign of prosperity and wealth. Here the blooms are reduced to near-geometric rosettes that read as texture from a distance and as flowers close to.

Made from kaolin with petuntse, the jar has been fired at high temperature to a hard, vitrified body with a clear ring. Each new jar is painted by hand, so the flowers never fall in quite the same place twice. Sold singly, it anchors the end of a long dining-room sideboard, where the dense pattern balances plain white tableware.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
