Foo dogs with curly manes and fanned tails stride round this lidded jar among blue clouds, each beside a dark ball trailing ribbons, all brushed freehand in cobalt against white porcelain.

Despite the name, the Foo dog is a lion. Lions have been tied to Buddhism since its beginnings – the teaching was said to spread through the lion's roar – and in China their figures often guarded the entrances of Buddhist temples. The same guardian, seated and glossy in deep blue glaze, forms the finial on the domed lid.

Round the neck runs a key-fret band, and small moulded lion heads stand out on the shoulder, while the foot is left unglazed in the manner of classic temple jars. Kaolin and petuntse are fired at high temperature into a hard, ringing porcelain, and because each new jar is decorated freehand, the lions fall a little differently from one jar to the next.

Sold singly; most photographs show two. On a console table opposite the front door, the jar meets visitors with the blue lion on its lid turned towards the room.
