Blue and White Tulip Vase - Kangxi Revival Style

This tulip vase gathers five short, round mouths on the shoulder of a squat, five-lobed body, around a taller central neck that ends in a globular crown of overlapping painted petals with a zigzag rim. Each opening takes a single stem.

Cobalt blue covers the whole surface in a dense scroll of stylised blossoms and tendrils, painted by hand on the white porcelain beneath a clear glaze. Underneath, every lobe stands on its own small foot ring, and the base bears the four-character Kangxi mark in blue: a feature of the style that does not date the piece. The porcelain, a mix of kaolin and petuntse fired at high temperature, has a lightly aged finish.

The tulipière, a flower vase with separate spouts for single stems, was being made in Delft by about 1690, of tin-glazed earthenware; despite the name, such vases held all kinds of cut flowers. The painting looks to the blue and white of the Kangxi reign (1662–1722), a period when Ming styles were themselves widely copied.

At 23 cm, the vase can stand at the centre of a round dining table without blocking the view across it, five tulips fanning out from the spouts around a sixth in the neck.
