Blanc de Chine Lidded Jars - Porcelain Pair

This pair of blanc de Chine lidded jars is glazed in a glossy cream-white that shows a faint green cast against a white wall and turns ivory in warmer light. Each ovoid body swells to a full shoulder and draws in towards a narrow foot.

The low domed lids have no porcelain knob: a brass ring on a small rosette plate sits at the top of each. Tiny brown specks are scattered through the glaze, and the two jars differ slightly in tone. Underneath, the recessed base is left unglazed, buff in colour and marked with concentric rings.

Both jars are made by hand, and the glaze keeps the small irregularities of that process. Blanc de Chine, 'white from China', is the name given to the white porcelain of Dehua in Fujian province; it reached Europe by sea in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and was imitated at Meissen, St Cloud and Chelsea. This pair follows that unpainted tradition.

Without painted decoration the jars sit quietly among other pieces. Placed at the two ends of a mantelshelf, they frame a clock or a small painting between them, and they are supplied as a pair.
