Black Marble Rhinoceros Sculptures – Art Deco Pair

This pair of black marble rhinoceros sculptures is carved by hand from a dark stone threaded with fine white veins. Each animal stands square on four legs with its head lowered and two horns rising from the snout, a carved saddle cloth and a flat-topped block across its back.

The modelling is firm and simplified: folds of skin are cut as clean ridges and the heavy body becomes a compact, geometric mass, in the Art Deco manner that in the 1920s turned animal figures into stylised, powerful silhouettes.

The rhinoceros has a long history in European art. Albrecht Dürer's woodcut of 1515, made without his ever having seen the animal, fixed the Western image of the rhino for centuries and made it a recurring decorative motif.

Each rhino rests on a low, flat plinth of the same black marble. At 22 cm high and 34 cm long, the two are heavy and square-ended enough to hold a row of books between them on a shelf, where the deep black of the stone gives a calm but striking accent.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
