Aurelia Lantern – Louis XVI Hall Lantern, Bronze

The Aurelia is a bronze hall lantern in the Louis XVI style, a slender cylinder of curved glass trimmed with bows and tassels. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, suspended lanterns with glazed panels became common in the early eighteenth century; most were square or rectangular and could be raised and lowered on cords and pulleys.

The Aurelia takes the rounder form. Read from the bottom up: a pierced gallery of small arches stands on ball feet, and plain tubular uprights, one crowned by a golden leaf, hold the smooth, clear glass. At the upper ring sit bow knots, with swags of twisted chain between them ending in small tassel-shaped drops – motifs typical of the Louis XVI style. Above, curved arms with ball knobs meet at the cap from which the chain rises.

The patina is warm brown and subtle, worn to gold on the uprights. A chain for hanging is included, and the lamp holder is E14.

Only 36 cm across and 80 cm high, it suits a narrow entrance passage or a landing where a broader fitting would crowd the walls, hung high enough to walk beneath. Each new lantern is made by hand, and its narrow cylinder lets the bows and swags read clearly against the light.
