Art Deco Side Cabinet – Savoy

Tall and slender, the Savoy is an Art Deco side cabinet in burr walnut veneer, open at front and back and divided by one shelf into two compartments of roughly equal height.

Top and sides form a single frame whose upper corners turn in a generous curve, so the veneer seems to pour over the edge and down each side. With no doors and no back panel, both compartments stay open to view from either side. The carcass is raised clear of a rectangular burr plinth on four glossy black ball feet.

Each Savoy is veneered by hand, inside faces included, with leaves chosen for their flame figure and small dark knots, which stay clearly visible under the gloss varnish. Plain surfaces where the figure of the wood is the only ornament, soft outlines and spheres in black against pale veneer are among the traits of French Art Deco furniture that the piece takes up.

Only 30 cm deep and 48 cm wide, it fits the alcove beside a chimney breast, the upper compartment taking a small bronze or a lamp and the lower one a row of books.
