Art Deco Round Side Table – Nocturne

Dark Macassar ebony veneer covers the round top of the Nocturne, an Art Deco side table whose deep chocolate-brown ground is drawn through with long, near-black streaks. On the thick edge the same stripes turn and run vertically.

Four flat legs in black high-gloss lacquer splay outwards from beneath the top, draw in at mid-height and bend inwards again near the floor, where they meet on a small faceted block. Block and round plinth are veneered in the same striped ebony as the top, so the black legs are held between two surfaces of dark wood.

The Nocturne is made new and by hand, its veneer laid so that the tight figure of the ebony reads cleanly from edge to edge; the varnish leaves it with a subtle sheen. Macassar ebony was one of the exotic woods of French Art Deco cabinetmaking, and it was with veneers of this kind that Ruhlmann made his name, as the V&A notes.

Its 53 cm top and 60.5 cm height fit the gap between a fireside chair and the wall, with room for a brass lamp and a glass. Brass and deep colours bring out the warmth hidden in the dark wood.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
