Art Deco Round Coffee Table – Coltrane

Broad and fairly tall, the Coltrane is an Art Deco coffee table with a round top, its honey-toned burr walnut centre set inside a wide band of reddish-brown veneer with dark stripes. The burr is laid in sectors, their seams meeting at the middle of the top.

The striped wood carries on over the thick edge and the legs, flat curved boards, wide where they leave the top and drawing together as they descend, so the base takes on a tulip outline with a line that brings the body of a saxophone to mind. They gather around a small black pyramid, below which a round foot of black ebony steps out in two tiers under a high gloss.

With a top 80 cm across and a height of 58 cm, the Coltrane suits a bay window with two chairs drawn up to it, and holds a teapot, two cups and a stack of books at once.

The Coltrane is made by hand as a new piece: burr and striped banding are cut and laid as separate veneers, then brought up under varnish. Pale wood played against black is one of the marks of French Art Deco furniture, a style for which, the V&A writes, the 1925 Paris Exposition was among the most pivotal moments.

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
