Art Deco Round Coffee Table – Speakeasy

Burr walnut above, a darker striped veneer below: the Speakeasy is a round Art Deco coffee table in two tones of wood. Its pale, glossy top, scattered with small dark knots, sits on a tall edge and legs of reddish-brown veneer streaked with near-black.

At 58 cm high it stands above the usual coffee-table height, which suits it to the middle of a group of armchairs; from each seat, the 80 cm top keeps a tray, books and glasses within reach.

Its base is pure geometry – the kind of form that, as the V&A observes, worked its way into every corner of daily life in the Art Deco years, down to cigarette cases and tableware.

The wide, flat legs arc outwards beneath the edge, sweep down and in, then kick out again onto small blocks set on a glossy black cross-shaped foot with stepped ends, with a dark sphere at its centre. The table is built new, by hand, with the burr walnut and the striped veneer laid separately and finished under varnish. Down at the foot, the dark ebony accents answer the pale burr of the top.
