This prowling panther comes down a steep bronze rock head first: the head is low and turned to the front left, the forepaws reach down the slope, and the hindquarters and long curled tail still rest on the top. The pose holds the moment between one step and the next.

The rock is stylised into a tall wedge with an irregular, pitted surface, against which the smooth, faceted body of the cat reads clearly. The contour follows the streamlined Art Deco line, with the weight on tension and outline rather than detail. The patina is a deep dark brown that looks almost black in shadow and draws out the pull of the muscles.

The stalking panther on a rock is a classic animalier subject. The plaster panthers by Rembrandt Bugatti (1884–1916) in the Musée d'Orsay are walking figures; this piece carries that close observation of the animal into a descent. Each new sculpture is hand-cast in bronze by the lost-wax method.

With a footprint of only 18 by 14 cm and a height of 30 cm, it stands on the corner of a writing desk, the descending body seen in profile from the chair.
