Art Deco Bedside Table – Beaumont

The Beaumont is an Art Deco bedside table with a rounded front and three drawers, each faced with a light geometric lattice of burr walnut veneer, its thin bands crossing on the diagonal.

Two drawers sit one above the other at the top; beneath them an open shelf passes right through the piece, and a third drawer fills a second rounded body lower down. A wide U-shaped support in darker, strongly figured veneer rises at the sides and cradles that lower body, and the whole stands on a plinth stepped in three tiers, rounded at the front and straight at the back. Each drawer has one polished spherical chrome knob.

The inlay is cut and laid by hand and finished under a clear high gloss, and the contrast between the lighter fronts and the deeper wood of the carcass gives the piece its graphic character. Stepped plinths and soft outlines belong to the vocabulary of French Art Deco, and the V&A counts the 1925 Paris Exposition among the style's most pivotal moments.

Its 90 cm height, above that of most bedside tables, suits a high box-spring bed, with the open shelf keeping a book or reading glasses within reach from the pillow.
