A single V-shaped support carries the rectangular top of the Vesper, an Art Deco console table whose honey-toned burr walnut veneer is set against high-gloss black lacquer.

On the front of each arm of the V, a black lacquered panel sits inside a slim frame of burr, so a black V is drawn within a wooden one; the inner faces and the broad sides are veneered in burr. Where the arms meet, a black collar steps down in several tiers onto a rectangular plinth, its cut-away corners forming four low feet.

Each Vesper is made by hand. The cabinetmakers choose the veneer leaves for their figure so that knots and flames run in harmony across top and support, and the high-gloss lacquer deepens the colour of the wood while protecting it. The strict geometry follows French Art Deco, whose showcase was the 1925 Paris Exposition; the V&A records that it gathered thousands of designers from across Europe and further afield.

Standing 90 cm high, a little above the back of most sofas, the Vesper can run behind a sofa placed out in the room, its 120 cm top taking a pair of lamps. From the side, the support reads as a broad plane of burr, wider at the top than at the foot.
