Art Deco Console Table – Gardet

The Gardet is an Art Deco console table with drawers, veneered all over in burr walnut whose warm, flame-like figure and small dark knots stand out under a clear gloss.

Its two wide supports have concave, curving sides; they splay outwards towards the top and stop short of each other at the foot, leaving an open V between them above a two-tier stepped plinth with rounded edges. Under the top, whose edge is moulded in two steps, sit two narrow drawers with rounded fronts and a small round metal knob each. The back is closed by a burr panel, finished like the front.

The veneer is selected by hand and laid book-matched, so the figure on each support mirrors itself about the centre, and a transparent varnish protects the surface and deepens the colour. MAD Paris sees the Paris exhibition of 1925 as the moment Art Deco reached its peak, and French furniture in the style often let the figure of the veneer serve as its only ornament.

In a dining room, the 108 cm top works as a serving table for a carafe and glasses, with napkins and cutlery kept in the drawers; at 39 cm deep it leaves the floor around the dining table free.
