A hand-cast bronze table lamp in the French Art Deco tradition, modelled as a seal balancing a frosted glass globe on its nose. Lamps of this kind, known in France as otarie lamps, were a favourite of 1930s sculptors such as Louis-Albert Carvin and Marcel Bouraine, who paired playful animal forms with functional lighting.

The figure is cast in solid bronze using the lost-wax method and finished with a dark, near-black patina that gives the metal a deep, soft sheen. It sits on a square base of dark marble, whose weight and straight edges set off the curve of the seal's body. The frosted glass shade casts a warm, diffused light.

The lamp works as ambient lighting on a sideboard, desk or side table, and its sculptural shape holds its own as a decorative object when switched off. The restrained design sits comfortably in both period and modern interiors.
