Art Deco Bronze Seal Table Lamp – 'Le Phoque'

'Le Phoque' is an Art Deco seal lamp in bronze: a seal stretches its neck straight up and balances a white glass globe on the tip of its snout. The body is one smooth, unbroken volume, without fur, folds or incised detail, so nothing interrupts the curve that rises from the fore-flippers to the nose.

The seal is lost-wax cast (cire perdue), a new wax model for every lamp, and the dark brown patina, applied by hand afterwards, reads almost black and has a soft sheen. It rests on a solid block of black marble with grey veining, square in plan and taller than it is wide, and its straight edges set off the rounded animal.

The reduced form is in the manner of François Pompon (1855–1933), who took detail away step by step until only the essential volumes of the animal remained – the method behind his Ours blanc in the Musée d'Orsay.

At 76 cm high, placed at one end of a sideboard, the lamp lifts the lit globe to about eye level; on a desk or beside an armchair it reads first as a sculpture. Switched off, the white globe and the black marble frame the dark bronze between them.
