Bronze Panther Sculpture - Art Deco

This panther sculpture in Art Deco style is caught in full stride: long and low, the head pushed forward just below the line of the back, the legs spread mid-step. The bronze is smooth and polished, so broad highlights slide over shoulder, flank and croup without a single tool mark to break them.

The tail swings out in a wide curve and closes in a tight upward spiral, the one ornamental flourish on an otherwise spare body. The face is reduced to simple planes: small rounded ears, incised almond eyes. In changing light the patina moves between dark brown and near black; the flat black marble plinth is polished until the paws are mirrored in it.

Between the wars, the walking panther on a black marble slab became a signature subject of Art Deco animal bronzes: the cat stood for strength and grace, held in taut, stylised lines. Each piece is new, cast by hand in bronze from its own wax model, which melts away in the process – the lost-wax technique.

Forty-two centimetres long and 16 cm high, it fits a floating wall shelf, where the spiral of the tail reads clearly against a plain wall. Seen from the side, the polished back gathers the light into one continuous line from head to tail.
