Art Deco Bronze Panther Sculpture – Walking Black Panther

This bronze panther sculpture moves in one long, low line, the head carried below the ridge of the back and the tail falling almost to the plinth before it hooks up at the tip. The gait is slow; the pose balances calm against tension.

The coat is modelled loosely, in short touches that break the near-black patina into small planes of light; in raking light the shoulder and haunch muscles stand out. This new bronze is hand-cast using the lost-wax method (cire perdue), so no two casts are quite alike. The narrow rectangular bronze plinth, irregular on top, extends the horizontal of the stride.

The sculpture is inspired by the work of Rembrandt Bugatti (1884–1916), who modelled animals from life; his plaster Panthère marchant (c. 1904), now in the Musée d'Orsay, has the terse, lively manner this piece follows. The striding big cat was a classic animalier subject; in the 1920s and 1930s the panther became an emblem of Art Deco.

At 49 cm long, 18.5 cm high and 7 cm wide, the panther fits a single shelf of an open bookcase, its profile running along the spines at eye level. From the side, the hooked tail at one end answers the lowered head at the other.
