This Art Deco monkey lamp is a bronze sculpture of a seated baboon cradling a cup that holds the light. The pose draws on the ancient Egyptian god Thoth, who was often shown as a baboon holding a crescent moon, a symbol of balance and wisdom. The subject and the clean geometric lines place the piece firmly in the Art Deco tradition.

The lamp is cast in solid bronze using the lost-wax method and finished with a deep, near-black patina. The cup is lined in polished brass, which warms the light, and the figure sits on a square bronze plinth. Each piece is made and finished by hand, so small variations in the patina are part of the work.

It suits a console, a study desk or a gallery shelf, and works well as a single statement light in a room with a quiet, considered scheme. A good choice for collectors of Art Deco lighting and animalier bronze.
