Bronze Lion Bookends - Art Deco Pair

These bronze lion bookends form a mirrored pair of maneless cats, each on its own base against an upright plate. One rises on its haunches, a forepaw resting on the top of the plate and the head turned towards its companion; the other sits low with forelegs braced and head lowered almost to the plate.

The anatomy is closely observed: raised shoulder blades, taut flanks, separately cut toes. The patina is green-blue over the heads, backs and haunches, near black in the hollows and warmer where the surface is rubbed. Each base has a moulded front edge in a warm brown tone.

Both lions are hand-cast in bronze using the lost-wax process (cire perdue); at about 4 kg each, the bookends keep a run of books upright. The pair is made in the manner of Georges Gardet (1863–1939), the Paris animal sculptor whose panthers are in the Musée d'Orsay. Paired lions are an old theme in sculpture: on Canova's tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peter's, Rome, one lion sleeps while the other keeps watch.

At 22 cm high and 12 cm wide, the pair can hold a set of reference books on a writing desk, the two cats facing each other across the spines as one group.
