Art Deco Bronze Horse Sculpture on Black Marble Base

This Art Deco horse, the 'Cheval France', is a stylised bronze based on a French design of the 1920s, standing in profile on a long plinth of black marble veined with white. The body is reduced to taut, flowing planes and rests on only two legs, one front and one hind.

The mane rises in a crenellated crest above an incised almond eye, and the tail falls in three ribbed strands that loop back to meet the hind leg, giving the figure a third point of support. Each new piece is hand-cast and patinated dark brown by hand, the slight variation in the surface set against the cool, veined marble.

The stylised, almost archaic horse recalls early Etruscan and Greek bronzes, and in pared-down form the horse became a favoured motif of Art Deco sculpture.

Fifty centimetres long but only 10 cm wide, it can stand lengthways on a bedroom chest of drawers against a plain wall, where the loop of the tail and the gap between the two legs show up clearly.
