Art Deco Bookcase – Burlington

The Burlington is an open Art Deco bookcase in honey-toned burr walnut, 180 cm high; its twelve compartments have neither doors nor a back, so light passes straight through the grid. Both top corners are rounded in a generous curve, and the dark eyes of the burr run across every side panel, shelf and upright.

In the second and fourth rows the uprights shift slightly sideways, so the compartments sit in a gentle stagger rather than a rigid grid. Below, the carcass rests on glossy black spheres above a stepped plinth, whose lower board sweeps outwards at each end.

Each Burlington is newly made by hand: the leaves of veneer are hand-selected, and the whole is finished in several coats of varnish that bring out the depth of the burr. Its soft architectural outline and unornamented surfaces follow French Art Deco furniture, in which the figure of the wood did the work of decoration; the V&A describes Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (1879–1933) as best known for his elegant lines and exotic wood veneers.

At 120 cm long, this burr walnut bookcase can fill the stretch of hallway wall between two doorways without crowding the passage. Each compartment then becomes a small stage for books, a bronze or a shell on a turned stand.

Warranty

All our products carry a 24-month warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care.
