Ribcage, vertebrae, sacrum and pelvis can all be read, and the vault of the skull is polished smooth above the eye sockets and teeth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe figure is a new lost-wax bronze (\u003cem\u003ecire perdue\u003c\/em\u003e), cast and given its brown patina by hand. One rough face of the block carries the incised foundry mark ‘Milo’, and the whole stands on a black marble plinth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRodin (1840–1917) conceived his seated figure from 1880, at about 70 cm, for the tympanum of \u003cem\u003eThe Gates of Hell\u003c\/em\u003e, where it first stood for Dante as \u003cem\u003eThe Poet\u003c\/em\u003e. Here a skeleton takes the poet’s place and turns the pose into a \u003cem\u003ememento mori\u003c\/em\u003e.
